Eu estava passeando no Tumblr, quando me deparei com o post What is Disney's obsession with The Swing? do usuário @ymirphile, em que questiona porque a pintura “O Balanço” aparece de várias maneiras nos filmes do estúdio. E ele me inspirou a buscar mais referências de pinturas nas animações, porque eu gosto de procurar esse tipo de informação 🙂

Mesmo sendo recente, podemos citar “BoJack Horseman” (2014 - 2020) onde, a partir do segundo episódio da primeira temporada (“BoJack, o Traidor da Pátria”), muitas obras-primas podem ser vistas nos cenários, principalmente no escritório de BoJack. Temos, por exemplo, uma reinterpretação equestre do famoso “Retrato de um Artista (Piscina com Duas Figuras)” (1972) de David Hockney, que se tornou a pintura mais cara vendida por um artista vivo (US$ 90,3 milhões), e que reflete fielmente o estilo de vida do personagem. Nesse mesmo escritório, descobrimos uma revivificação antropomórfica de "A Dança” (1910) do artista francês Henri Matisse. No episódio 4, da 3° temporada, ''Peixe Fora D’Água'’, BoJack está no Pacific Ocean Film Festival para promover seu novo filme, e no seu quarto de hotel, descobrimos uma pintura de Picasso: “Figures at the Seaside” de 1931.

Ainda pode entrar aqui, o revival com cobras do famoso “O Beijo” (1907-1908) de Gustav Klimt no episódio ''Amor e/ou Casamento'’ (T03, E05). E, na cena de abertura do episódio 11 da 3ª temporada, ''Demais, Cara!'', descobrimos a famosa “Ofélia” (1851-1852) do pintor inglês John Everett Millais acima da cama de Sarah Lynn, uma estrela pop instável.  

O Japão não decepciona quando o assunto é referências a outras obras, sejam elas nacionais sejam estrangeiras. “JoJo Bizarre Adventure” (1987), de Hirohiko Araki, é um mangá cheio de referências, que vão desde pessoas até marcas famosas, e claro, pinturas. 

Na quinta parte da série, “Vento Aureo”, o vilão Polpo diz que sente falta das pinturas de Michelangelo nas paredes da Capela Sistina, porém, ele possui as pinturas de “A Igreja em Auvers”, de Vincent Van Gogh, e “Vairumati”, de Gauguin. Durante a luta com Ghiaccio, o jeito que Giorno Giovanna segura Guido Mista no final da luta é uma referência à “Pietà” (1499) de Michelangelo, na Basílica de São Pedro, na Cidade do Vaticano.

Logo depois desse arco, em “Stone Ocean”, sexta parte da série, Bohemian Rhapsody, a habilidade stand de Ungaro, convocou algumas obras de arte como "Autorretrato com orelha enfaixada e cachimbo" (1889) de Vincent van Gogh e a já mencionada, “O Nascimento de Vênus” (1483) de Sandro Botticelli. 

O título da light novel cancelada e inacabada, “The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp”, é uma homenagem a uma pintura de Rembrandt de mesmo nome (“A Lição de Anatomia do Dr. Tulp” [1632]).

A abertura do anime de fantasia científica e terror seinen “Elfen Lied” (2004) referencia muitas obras de Gustav Klimt, incluindo o já visto “O Beijo” (1907-1908), além de “Retrato de Adele Bloch-Bauer I” (1907) e “O Cumprimento” (1905), entre outros.

Grande fã de arte, a autora de "Sailor Moon” (1991), Naoko Takeuchi, encheu o mangá, o anime e a publicidade de sua obra de homenagens a elas. Como em uma ilustração que Usagi e Chibiusa aparecem juntas, que faz referência a “The Lantern Bearers” (1908), de Maxfield Parrish, pseudônimo de Frederick Parrish.

A xilogravura “A Grande Onda de Kanagawa” (1830 ou 1831) do famoso artista japonês Katsushika Hokusai aparece como fundo de uma imagem promocional de Ami Mizuno, a Sailor Mercúrio, cujos poderes estão relacionados à água. 

“Daydream” (1897) e “Morning Star” (1902), do pintor Alphonse Mucha, um dos principais artistas da Art Noveau, serviram de inspiração para Naoko Takeuchi ilustrar Sailor Moon. E na abertura do anime nos Estados Unidos, Usagi corre atrás de Tuxedo Mask com “A Noite Estrelada” (1889) de Van Gogh, mencionada anteriormente, ao fundo. 

E foram essas as referências artísticas que consegui encontrar na minha pesquisa. Espero que tenham, pelo menos, se entretido um pouco.

Typeface response and research context

Futura is a san serif type and was created by Paul Friedrich August Rennner who was a German typeface designer. Composed between 1924 and 1926 but was commercially released in 1027, Futura which became one of the most successful types. Made by the Bauer Type Foundry in Frankfurt, Germany. Designed as a contribution to the New Frankfurt-projects. Based on geometric shapes, significantly circles. Futura reminds me of helvitica in a way that its sleek and tidy. Makes me feel that I can use its for any poster and it would still deliver the message effectively. I would use this typeface for a concept that has a minimalistic feel to it.

Hightower was created by Tobias Frere-Jones in 1994. Hightower is a serif typeface and slightly based and influenced on the printing of Nicolas Jenson who was based in Venice in 1470s. Which is now what we call the ‘old style’ of serif fonts. Hightower makes me want to read more, the serifs make it more interesting to me. It has an old type of style and If I were to use this typeface I would use it for a paragraph of text if the content called for it. Comparing futura and hightower they are roughly similar in the thickness of them, futura is a san serif and hightower is a serif typeface. They both feel to me moderately similar just with subtle differences.
